Our Story

Who Is #Mortasay?

MORTASAY is the expression of an American musical duo, composed of married musicians Vonyse Reeder and Amy Lou Palmer. Formed in 2010 in Los Angeles, California, MORTASAY reflects an eclectic indie electronic soul sound. Or as Vonyse likes to call it Alter’d Native Soul. Their lyrics and sound reveal a merger of two unconventional childhoods.  Vonyse, an Indianapolis, Indiana native, and Amy Lou, a native of Eastern Washington State, consider themselves city-bound country girls. The music discloses many musical influences from country to soul, steeped in activism, spirituality, and consciousness. Growing up in different parts of America, both void of diversity, music has the throughline that has shaped how they perceive society and connected as a married couple. “It’s real, it’s raw, it’s bathed in our unique cultural experience, it’s us. We here!”

#Mortasay’s combined experiences:

  • Toured with Cake, Gomez, Rootbeer
  • Played shows with Chaka Kahn, Black Eyed Peas, Ozomatli, Hillsong, Indie Arie, Erykah Badu, Morris Day and the Times
  • Performances at Milwaukee Summerfest, House of Blues, LA Pride, San Diego Pride, Las Vegas Pride, Troubadour, SXSW, DTLA Proud and numerous colleges.
  • You can hear some of Amy’s percussion skills in the track “Party Like a Rockstar.” by Shane Hendrix featuring Nicki Minaj.

“The worst thing you can do is censor yourself as the pencil hits the paper. You must not edit until you get it all on paper. If you can put everything down, stream-of-consciousness, you’ll do yourself a service.”

– Stephen Sondheim
